Carl Uhlig Obituary

Carl Fredrick Uhlig, 80, of Metropolis, Nevada, returned home to his Heavenly Father peacefully on February 10, 2024, after succumbing to complications from prostate cancer. He was proceeded in death by his parents Herb and Iona Uhlig and his brother Bert.

Carl was born on June 1, 1943, to Herbert Max Uhlig and Iona (Svedin) Uhlig in Elko, Nevada and raised on a ranch near the ghost town of Metropolis. It was there at the ranch where Carl was able to learn the value of hard work, the importance of family, the significance of being a good neighbor and developed an unmatched sense of humor.

Carl graduated from Wells High School in 1961. Then went on to attend college in Ogden, Utah where he would meet the love of his life Glenda Lorraine Draney. After a year and a half of courtship, they were married on June 10, 1966, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Carl and his young bride returned to the family ranch where they would raise beef, horses, sheep, chickens and four kids.

Carl was an expert horseman who displayed his skills working cows, riding the range, packing large deer off the mountain, driving one of his prized draft teams, horse racing, chariot racing, teaching one of the many kids in the family how to ride and helping the 4H club members show horses. For many years he tormented the tops of the Wells chariot racing club and during his brief horse racing career was able to produce a champion in the first annual Nez Perce Appaloosa Triple Crown in 1981.

Carl had an innate ability to make kids smile. Whether it was one of his many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, or a random toddler in the checkout line, his charm and fun-loving spirit could always bring out a smile. This skill was put to expert use for 32 years as a school bus driver lifting generations of Wells area youths' spirits as he filled in on local routes and covering the activity trips so that he could watch his kids play sports across the state.

Carl was proud to be a Nevada rancher and to continue the legacy that his grandfather started when they moved to Metropolis in 1918. Carl was passionate about maintaining and improving the land. Carl served 40 years on the Starr Valley Conservation District board and 14 years with the Nevada Conservation Commission.

Carl is survived by his wife of 57 years Glenda Uhlig. The pride of their lives three sons Max Uhlig of Metropolis, Glen Uhlig of Elko, Brock(Jamie) Uhlig of Sparks and daughter Mindy(Zach)Johnson of Winnemucca as well as his grandchildren Cooper, Holten, Tatum, Bristol (BLU), Deklan and Penelope (Penny).
