Joseph “Speedy” Albert Gonzales, Jr. Our loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather was called to the lord on Monday, April 8, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born September 9, 1948, to Joseph and Clara Gonzales, and was a Vietnam veteran with the United States Marine Corps.
After serving his country, he returned to Elko, Nevada, and married Carol Romero on August 22, 1970. Together, they had two sons, Kenny and Matt.
He remained in Elko most of his life and retired from the Cortez Gold Mine in 2016. He was very active in sports and coaching his grandchildren and had a particular love for fast-pitch softball and golf. Most of his time was spent on the golf course, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never missed a single game, and you seldom saw him without his beloved dog, Sisco.
If you needed anything at any time, he was there without any hesitation, and if you didn’t have a sense of humor, you didn’t have a chance with him because ninety percent of the time he was a jokester.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Clara Gonzales, and two sisters, Josephine Gonzales and Delores Dickson. Speedy is survived by his two sons, Kenny (Carmen) and Matt (Tasha), seven grandchildren, Brittney, BreAnna, Braxten, Joshua, Kiana, Natalia and Blue, four great grandchildren, Kaden, Karsen, Shakka and Tuff, two sisters, Veronica Mendive, and Vera Gonzales, one brother, Gasper Gonzales, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A viewing is scheduled for Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 10:00am, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00am at Burns Funeral Home, 895 Fairgrounds Road, Elko, NV 89801.
