L.H. "Buck" Metcalf Obituary

U.S. NAVY SENIOR CHIEF PETTY OFFICER

L.H. “BUCK” METCALF

1929-2020

With great pride but with greater sadness the world has lost one of the best. LH. “Buck '' Metcalf left us on January 8, 2020 to take his well-earned place in heaven. Buck was born August 18, 1929 in Rome, GA to Stanley and Addie Metcalf. He was one of 9 children. At age 17 Buck left Georgia to join the United States Navy where he served with great pride and passion for 21 years, with full tours of Korea and Vietnam. Buck retired with many high praises from his superiors and as Senior Chief Petty Officer. He served on several AirCraft Carriers as well as destroyers. He also completed nuclear school and even had a speaking role in a 1956 Naval Movie called ''Battle Stations' 'starring John Lund. Buck enjoyed almost everything he did in life and always put his heart, soul and honor into every endeavor he accomplished.

He retired from the Reno Cannon International Airport, a job he loved very much and spoke of often. He met many of his lifelong friends during his time at the airport and received very high regards and great appreciation from his employees and many airlines and other airport representatives. Buck also retired from Yankee Caithness Geothermal Power Plant which he also loved and enjoyed very much. Buck was definitely a “jack of all trades” it seemed he could fix anything, solve the problem and mend the fences. He owned a plumbing buisness for a short time and work for the City of Reno, which is where he met his wife of 44 years, Gay. He was very proud to be a 32* Scottish Rite Mason and belonged to the Reno Lodge for years. The Vision of the Scottish Rite Freemasons states “The Scottish Rite Freemasonry seeks to strengthen the community and believes that each man should act in civil life according to his individual judgement and the dictates of his conscience. “Buck lived those words to its fullest. He belonged to the Lions Club and donated many hours helping those in need. He worked with the Children's Miracle Network on several occasions. He served on the Reno Planning Commission, the Washoe County Planning Commission and was instrumental in the successful growth of the Reno Truckee Meadows area. He rode with Washoe County Sheriff's Mounted Posse on his trusted horse Red and assisted in a few successful search and rescue missions. He would give the shirt off his back to help anyone. Buck was an amazing father, grandfather, husband, brother and friend. He loved to fish and golf, but enjoyed flying the most. He left shoes way too big to fill. To tell the story of his life would fill a novel . He was an amazing man. Buck was welcomed home by the love of his life Gay and his beloved son, Nathan (both of whom will be laid to rest with him as he requested) and many relatives and friends over the years. He is survived by one remaining sister Ava (Rome GA) his daughters Kathielyn (Clayton), Sheila (Tim), Sheri (Don) and grandson Kane and granddaughter Eva and, a large extended family in Georgia and his two best buddies Maggie (dog) and Murphy (cat) who never left his side.

Two services will be held in his honor. Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 1pm at Spring Creek Baptist Church 368 Spring Creek Parkway, Spring Creek, NV. Burial with Full Military Honors will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 11am at the National Veterans Cemetery, 14 Veterans Way, Fernley, NV.
