Robert Jay Jones was born 8/18/1934 and passed from his earthly experience 5/28/2021.
He was born in Elko Nevada to Emma Louise and Albert William Jones. He was the last of 12 children.
He graduated from Elko High School in 1952. He was very athletic and participated in football,
basketball and track. During his senior year he qualified to attend the prestigious BYU Invitational Track
Meet and placed in the hurdles. He was also president of DeLoreola which was the Elko Chapter of
National Honor Society. He went on to attend University of Nevada, Reno where he played basketball
for three years and ran track for four. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and served as both
president and vice president. He was granted a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Gymnastic School in
Oslo, Norway. He was trained as a physical educator there and became an accomplished skier. Once he
returned to the states he completed his master’s degree and begin teaching at Lassen High School in
Susanville, California. Two years later, he moved to teach Sciences and coach basketball at Lassen
Community College. He retired from teaching in 1987 and returned to Elko, Nevada.
He was a longstanding member of the Northeastern Nevada Officials Association and has officiated all
levels of basketball. He has dedicated countless hours of youth sport programs and training officials. He
also officiated track and field events
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He married Margaret Ellison in
1964 was sealed for time and eternity in the Logan, UT temple. They have two girls; Sheral (Cedar City,
UT) and Kathleen (Steve) of Montague California. They have 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
They built a life of love and separated only when Margaret passed in October 2020.
He will be buried beside Margaret in Elko Nevada
Their hearts are together again with special memories left for many friends and family. Robert’s family
